hmm.. and I cannot play music when thinking.

You see, thinking is TALKING inside your head. Not always, visual and other mechanisms take some of it, but internal speech takes a lot of time in the process.

Music is also "speech" in the sense that it conveys phrasing and intonation and a strong voice (i.e. "melody") which is supposed to take all of your attention. That's how it's composed and why composers struggle to get "catchy (melodic) phrases" in it. So if you play something, your own voice has to fight the externally imposed voice. And this clobbers productivity A LOT.

Music is OK when you do something purely mechanical.

Of course, I was talking about music that HAS phrasing, intonation and melody.. Pseudo-music that contains deliberate admixture of white noise (like "techno") or exploits drumbeat is simply noise.
Presense of noise is guaranteed to decrease productivity of any mental efforts. Proven many times, starting from the 1940s when the number of errors of Morse radio operators was measured (always worse in noise), and they were specially trained to work under such hostile conditions.

..and of couse I excluded the most aggressive "music" like that heavy metal band they used in Guantanamo to torture the inmates. It's simply a deliberate construction of conditions for speeding up exhaustion. Then a broken prisoner can be easier influenced or manipulated. It's like sleep deprivation in a sense.

So, that's why I cannot play any music when thinking: It overflows internal voice.
