I'd like to offer to take over these forums

Post by itistoday »

I tried to get in contact with Lutz, here, by email, by Facebook, and haven't heard back from him.

I don't know who hosts these forums, but they are clearly in a sorry shape.

I'd like to offer to help migrate these forums to better software, with better spam protection, and HTTPS.

Qualifications:

I have experience hosting forums: https://www.taoeffect.com/forum/

I have a long history of being a newLISP fan:

- https://www.taoeffect.com/blog/2010/01/ ... ntax-away/
- Co-created the Dragonfly newLISP Web Framework, which has a dedicated forum here: viewforum.php?f=17

If whoever runs these forums could please reach out to me both here and via email, I'd appreciate it.

To whomever runs this forum,

I agree with Greg (itistoday). If you hand the reins over to him, it will be in good hands.

Hopefully you can contact Lutz and get an approval. WDYT?

Best, Rick (rickyboy)

this whole case is weird, i suppose no one replied to greg. no one knows what's with Lutz who really owns and runs newlisp.org domain and web site now because it was even down for a while, who runs this forum etc. :(

Please don't take me wrong I assume that Lutz is in state in which he is unable to exist in this community anymore whatever this state is. I would consider to take
code, rename language to elimininate lisp flamewars and trolls (name it eg. Lutz) buy appropriate domain to run website and forum and create some small github community around official repo. I'm not C programmer, but I'm ready to contribute with some money to help this happen.

It is so sad for me even some people consider newlisp mature and done.

I agree! Maybe you and itistoday can partner up and take over this forum and hopefully the codebase as well. Maybe a github fork? Anyway, I sure hope that Lutz is alive and well and not a COVID victim or some such.

I'm not a proficient with newLisp, but still carry a soft spot for it.

Update: I've gotten in touch with Ryon (the forum admin) and hopefully we can get the ball rolling on the migration. I'll post updates here as progress is made. Please keep in mind I'm doing this in my spare time. ^_^

So why hasn't Ryon been maintaining the forums? They seem to be in fair shape as far as I can tell. However, I haven't here often lately. He's still reachable, so he must know something about what's going on with Lutz etc hopefully.

I can't speak for him, but I can speculate:
 • Managing a website and dealing with HTTPS can be too much of a pain for some to deal with
 • Managing phpBB specifically can be a huge pain (it was when I ran it for our forums - that's why I ended up migrating to SMF)
 • Dealing with spammers can be very difficult when the forum software doesn't provide good tools to deal with it
 • Maybe he just doesn't have time?

Maybe we should create a Reddit sub as a backup.

Sooner or hopefully later, Newlisp itself has to be taken over as well, and we will need to talk so that's there's only one version 11.

That might well be the most pain-free way to launch a fresh newLisp interim community. A dedicated site always seems better to me though. I wonder if the forum postings are archived in any way for future importing into another system?

I'm going to do my best to import the existing posts. The challenge will be going through all the spam accounts and deleting them.

I hear you!

I wish that I was in better shape (leukaemia from Agent Orange exposure) then I could try to be of some help in this big job. Now - in and out of chemo and dragging my tail-feathers! LOL

Damn that really sucks! Made a little prayer for your recovery!

Thanks for the prayers! I need all that I can get.
No cure! No recovery - the chemo just sets it back for a short while.
I spent 2 years in Viet Nam with the US Marines - up at Phu Bai and points north and west.
The saying goes among us Marines that "they killed us in Nam, but we just haven't died yet" LOL
I'm turning 76 in a few weeks God willing, so I have nothing to complain about!!
I tinker with newLisp and other programming languages simply as an effort to keep the grey cells from dying off to quickly. :D

Giving the forum a boost is a very welcome undertaking!

However, I'd be wary of just taking user database and posts and move them to some other system: users made a choice of registering at this particular system on a particular platform, and shouldn't just be moved somewhere else. Keeping an archived version (maybe cleaned up from spam) of the forum, with a reference to whatever replaces it would, IMHO, be a preferable alternative.

As for the tool, I keep hearing good things about Zulip, who is offering a free hosted version for open source projects: https://zulip.com/for/open-source

Myself I have good experience from participating in a forum included in the Fossil SCM, it looks like this: https://fossil-scm.org/forum/forum

No objection to itistoday's proposal. Actually, we should consider the possibility that Newlisp's main site could go down.

Meanwhile, FWIW, I've created a subreddit as an emergency backup plan.

Thanks for stepping up itistoday, Astrobe, and others!

Greg, your blog post on taoeffect turned me on to newlisp ten(?) years ago, and I remain a big fan.

Like dukester I'm on my last quarter century, so not sure how much I can contribute, but at least a little cash here and there.

I'm on the road for a week, but I'll keep checking in here and at Astrobe's "Lounge" over at reddit.

Hang in there, dukester!

Thanks cameyo for offering to help! I've been quite busy but I'll give this a try this week. I think the main issue might be figuring out how to download the forum's archive so that I can import it into SMF. Ryon gave me admin permissions but the admin dashboard doesn't seem to give me a way to download the backup archive from the web panel. If you have any suggestions regarding that let me know!

Unfortunately I have no knowledge to help you.
Maybe you can find the solution here:
move a phpBB forum in another server
https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2471681
Transferring Your Board to a New Host or Domain
https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... or-domain/
But I think you've already read them...
Thanks again

Alright guys, here's an update as promised:

- I registered https://newlispfanclub.com and installed SMF forums
- Registrations are currently disabled until we can figure out how to import these forums (or decide we aren't going to in order to start fresh)
- I installed the phpBB forum importer

The problem is: the forum importer thing is asking me to give it the entire contents of http://www.newlispfanclub.alh.net/forum/ as a directory.

And it might ask for more stuff (like a mysql dump, not sure, I haven't gotten past Step 1).

I do not have access to this info. Only Ryon can give that to me. So Ryon, if you're listening, please get in touch with me via email if you'd like to help with this. Otherwise I cannot even attempt to import these forums.

Update:

Good news: Ryon got back to me with the files! 🎉

Bad news: This is going to take longer than I expected. The software for importing the forums isn't very well written or maintained, so I'm going to have to spend time debugging and trying various different approaches to import the forums. I'll keep you guys posted.

Hey guys - Great news! The new forums are live!! 😄

The database import is from March 3, 2023, so any posts created after that are missing.

https://newlispfanclub.com

Please try out the new forums and let me know if they work for you.

I'm going to check with Ryon about next steps. Here's what I think might make sense to do:

1. Lock down these forums (prevent registrations, logins)
2. Send a mass email out to members linking them to the new forums
3. Sticky a thread to all forums linking to the new forums.

How does that sound as a plan?
